Leishiyo calls for preservation of indigenous organic spices

Phungyar AC MLA Leishiyo Keishing has called for the preservation and promotion of indigenous spices, "Shurikaso/Garlic" to bring economic development and sustainable livelihood.
He made the statement during the inaugural function of IX Edition District Level Shurikaso Phanat/Garlic festival of Talui village held at Pre-Centenary hall.
Earlier, Leishiyo Keishing inaugurated the festival by cutting the ribbon in the presence of ex-councillors Somimayar Awungshi and Kapangpam Zimik, headman S Akhai, women leaders, VAs and youth leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, the MLA dwelt on the national programme, "One block one Product" to promote horticultural and agricultural products for large scale production by encouraging the farmers to bring sustainable economy.

Urging the people of Talui to not depend on others, he said, "dependency has never been our tradition, our ancestors were hard working and lived peacefully" .
As part of the festival, Talui Kharing kharak Pheichak was displayed by village youth.
Executive member Ningchim Raikhan stated that the garlic production was less this year as compared to the previous years.
According to her, over 8000 kg of garlic were put up for sale in 17 stalls.
It may be mentioned that Shurikaso is an organic spice having a peculiar taste with nutritional and medicinal values.
The one day district level garlic festival was organised by Kharngarum SHG Federation, a conglomeration of 13 SHG units of Talui village.
