Ukhrul, April 15 2022:
The roadside drainage ditches in several parts of Ukhrul town have remained blocked and non-existent due to prolonged neglect.
The blockade of the ditches is mainly due to accumulation of varied waste particles and earth being moved into them by construction works.
As the drainage remains clogged and stops running, the stretch of main road way in front of TNL office at Viewland became water-logged during the recent rains.
However, with the authorities failing to do the needful to clear off the drainage, one Thingrei, a local resident, took up a lonely struggle to dig the blocked drainage.
Thingrei said that he runs a tea stall on the roadside and he finds the main road water-logged each time rains fall due to blockade of the drainage.
"I have decided to do this myself because no authorities have been able to do anything about this," he said.
Holding a pickaxe in his hand with a spade and a hoe at his disposal, Thingrei said that he started the work on Wednesday.
"Earlier, I had informed residents in my neighbourhood about doing this social work but since no one turned up, I decided to do it alone," he said.
