Manipur police have tightened security for migrant workers in the aftermath of killing of nine non-local workers in a blast that occurred at Nagamapal yester-day.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range 1) Clay Khongsai said that Manipur police have taken up necessary measures to protect non-local labourers living in Imphal.
Police have directed the non-locals not to venture out to distant and isolated places in search for work, he said and added that SPs of Imphal East and Imphal West districts have been asked to intensify police patrolling at the localities having substantial non-local population.
Over 60,000 migrant wor-kers coming from different parts of the country including Bihar, UP, West Bengal and Assam stay at rented quarter in Imphal city including Nagamapal, Wahengbam Leikai, Keishampat, Khoyathong and Uripok areas and most of them are porters, petty traders and hawkers.
Meanwhile, police commandos and Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) personnel have started removal of suspicious garbage piles at Imphal market from today.
On the first day, garbage accumulated at different locations of Governor Road, Nagamapal and Kakhulong were removed using earth excavators.
L Vaiphei of Commando Bazar Unit said that today's drive was carried out as there was suspicion of planting explosives inside garbage piles by anti-social elements.
The drive would continue at other locations of Imphal market tomorrow, he added.
