Students solve ATM security crisis

Mysore, June 11 2014:
Three students of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore have bagged Tata Consultancy Services Award for their project 'Light-Weight Operating System for ATMs' .
The award winning students are Anantha Krishna Acharya, Yoihenba Kongbam and Tejas Rajamohan.
Yoihenba Kongbam of Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal is a final year student of BTech (Computer Science Engineering) admitted into Sri Ayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore through Manipur Government Engineering admission quota.
He has passed the course and has been appointed to the post of Software Development Engineer in Flipkart Internet Pvt Ltd, Bangalore which he will join on July 1, 2014 .
95 per cent of world's ATMs are being run on Microsoft Windows XP and almost all India's ATMs on this operating system.
An announcement made by the electronic giant Microsoft earlier this year said that the support of XP would be scrapped and all ATMs working on similar operating system were vulnerable to security threats.
The student's innovation focused on finding alternative solution to the problem.
They converted the current operating system of ATM to the Linux Operating System.
"We have always been passionate about Computer Science and we wanted the final year project to be a solution to real world problem.
So we decided to take up the project", said Tejas.
The trio was awarded with a medal each and a cash prize of Rs 20,000 for the team.
