Rape accused jailed amid protest at court gate

Imphal, June 10 2022:
CJM; Imphal East has on Friday remanded one Gaigondin Kamei, who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl to judicial custody till June 24, amid protest by family members of the rape survivor and activists of women's organisation at the court's gate demanding severest form of punishment to the culprit.
The police produced Gaigondin Kamei (30) of Bethany Colony in Tamenglong district, presently residing at Lamphel, before the court with a prayer for remanding him in judicial custody for further investigation.
On receipt of information that accused Gaigondin would be produced in the court, families of the survivor and women activists stormed the court's gate and staged a protest there demanding that there should be no leniency against the culprit.
However, a police team managed to keep the situation under control.
