Imphal, February 21 2023:
Pointing out that Khundong Khunkhai village under Tamei assembly constituency is lagging behind in almost all the major sectors, especially in road connectivity, education and healthcare, the village authority chairman Majilungbou Thiumai has drawn the attention of the government to fill up these gaps.
Interacting with the media at the village on Tuesday, Majilungbou informed that construction work on the building of the primary school in the village began under SSA some years back but it was left incomplete and enquired if the School Fagathansi Mission of the government does not cover the remote areas in the hills.
Stating that there are seven government teachers in the school and that the villagers self-upgraded the school up to class 8 in the interest of the children of the village and hired five teachers privately to run the school, which has 142 students at present, he urged the government to officially approve the upgradation.
The chairman further informed that students are pursuing higher education by staying in rented rooms in Kanglatongbi and Noney.
On the other hand, he said, the Primary Health Sub-Centre in the village does not have any staff or nurse.
As a result, they are facing immense hardships in times of medical emergencies.
The village has 141 households with a population of around 860 people.
Though the villagers are getting tap water under Jal Jeevan Mission, the water pressure is very low and they could hardly get proper water flow.
Considering the scarcity of water they are facing, he urged the government to construct a larger water tank.
The main roads connecting the village with the rest of the state are Noney or Leimakhong roads.
The road to Noney has a distance of around 90 km while the distance up to Leimakhong is around 35 km.
Dye to deplorable condition of these roads, the residents are facing severe hardships as the roads become muddy during monsoon season and dusty during dry season.
Expressing concern over the situation, the village chairman appealed to the government to blacktop the roads under PMGSY.
He further said that they had requested PWD for blacktopping the road on multiple occasions but no initiatives have been taken up so far.
The residents heard about the RD&PR minister's visits in hill areas assessing road conditions, he said and drew the minister's attention while urging him to visit the village one day and experience the hardships the villagers are facing.
