Mother Language Day observed in Thoubal

Thoubal, February 21 2023:
In connection with the observance of International Mother Language Day, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Research Committee and Manipuri Department of YK College, Wangjing organised the 5th National Seminar on "Manipuri Language: Aspect of history, policy, education and tribal languages" at the mini conference hall of the college on Tuesday.
The seminar was attended by Manipur University Linguistic Department associate professor Dr H Surmangol Sharma as moderator and YK College principal Dr Soibam Giri Singh as president.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Giri informed that views shared by linguistic experts at the seminar would be reviewed by the Research Committee for forwarding the same to the authority concerned.
During the seminar, Centre for Naga Tribal Languages and Studies, Nagaland University assistant professor Dr L Bijenkumar presented a paper on "Language Endangerment and Languages of North East India"; YK College Manipuri Department assistant professor Dr Longjam Anand on "History of Manipuri Languages from 1885 Onwards" and Dr Sh Ghanashyam on "Linguistic Taboo in Manipuri Language", while YK College English Department associate professors P Somarendra and assistant professor N Andropov were present as rapporteurs.
On the other hand, Waikhom Mani Girls' College observed International Mother Language Day under the theme of "Multi Lingual Education; A necessity to transform Education" on Tuesday.
The observance was attended by College principal Prof H Manoranjan Sharma as chief guest while vice principal Dr S Shyam Kiran, Manipuri Department head L Memtombi and Political Science head Naorem Hoti Kumar were the guests Of honour.
During the observance, the speakers noted the threat to our mother tongue due to decline in usage of the same and mixing with the vocabulary of other languages.
As such, it is the responsibility of all to protect and promote our mother tongue including cultivating the habit of reading books or writing journals in our mother tongue.
The speakers then appealed to the young people to take on the mantle of reviving and preserving our mother tongue.
