Importance of Manipuri language and multilingual education underscored

Thoubal, February 21 2023: As observed across the globe, YK College Wangjing and Waikhom Mani Girls College celebrated International Mother Language Day 2023 today at the campus of the respective colleges.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Research Committee, YK College Wangjing in collaboration with the Manipuri Department of the College conducted the 5th National Seminar on "Manipuri Language : Aspect of history, policy, Education And Tribal Languages" in connection with International Mother Langauge Day 2023 .

The national seminar was held at the Mini Conference Hall of YK College and moderated by Dr H Surmangol Sharma, Associate Professor, Linguistic Department, Manipur University with Dr Soibam Giri Singh, Principal, YK College attending the event as the functional president.

Speaking in this connection, Dr Soibam Giri Singh stated that the national seminar was organised in connection with International Mother Langauge Day 2023 to promote and safeguard "Meiteilon" .

He further stated that the important talking points gathered from the language experts at the seminar will be discussed by the research committee of the College.

Notably, Dr L Bijenkumar, Associate Professor, Centre for Naga Tribal Languages And Studies, Nagaland University spoke on the topic of "Langauge Endangerment and Languages of North East India"; Dr Longjam Anand, Assistant Professor, Manipuri Department, YK College Wangjing on "History of Manipuri Languages from 1885 Onwards" and Dr Sh Ghanashyam on "Linguistic Taboo in Manipuri Language" .

Meanwhile, P Somarendra, Assistant Professor, English Department, YK College Wangjing and Assistant Professor N Andropov took part as rapporteurs of the event.

Separately, Waikhom Mani Girls College also celebrated International Mother Language Day today at the conference hall of the College.

The event was conducted on the theme "Multi Lingual Education: A necessity to transform Education" .

Dignitaries present at today's function include Professor H Manoranjan Sharma, Principal, Waikhom Mani Girls College; Dr S Shyam Kiran, Vice-Principal; L Memtombi, HoD, Manipuri Department and Naorem Hoti Kumar, HoD, Political Science Department as presidium members.
