Tamenglong, February 02 2023:
Tousem Area Students' Organisation (TASO) has strongly condemned the notification issued by Tousem sub-divisional officer (SDO) on Wednesday for a joint survey of the Kaiphundai Reserved Forest extension.
Tousem SDO Paul Nangsha in pursuance of the instruction given by the deputy commissioner, Tamenglong; issued a notification for joint survey of the Forest to be headed by SDO, Jiribam along with staff of Tousem SDO.
Condemning the notification, TASO burnt tyres at several places in Tousem area and caution of more intense agitation if the government ignores sentiment of the people.
In a release, TASO warned the government against involving Jiribam forest department and further clarified that Kaiphundai village is under the jurisdiction of Tousem Sub Division.
"Hence, the government officials must consult with the local people, village authority and the civil organisations for any survey", it asserted, while observing that such survey is designed to intrude and grab the land of the tribal community.
Thus, no encroachers will be tolerated, the statement said.
It also threatened to impose indefinite bandh at any time if the government does not uphold desire of the people.
Tousem people should not be held responsible for any untoward incidents.
Instead, Divisional Forest Officer, Jiribam and the Forest Department, Manipur should be held responsible, the statement added.
