Book on edible fungi released

Manipur University vice-chancellor professor N Lokendra released professor N Ira-banta's book 'Wild edible fleshy fungi of Indo-Myanmar hotspot' in a function organised by Nibiaa Devices Pvt Ltd at the court hall of the university on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, professor Loken-dra observed how people of the north east India consume several species of wild fungi as food.
However, there are several species of poisonous fungi and there are reports of casualties after consuming such species.
The book will help in identifying the edible and non-edible species of fungi, especially those in the mushroom family.
Moreover, the book published by Lambert Academic Publishing, a well-known publishing house based in Germany, will help entrepreneurs and self-help groups as well, he said.
Taking the opportunity, the vice-chancellor also informed the gathering that the life science department of the university has been helping several mushroom farmers.
MU School of Life Sciences dean professor R Varatharajan, Department of Life Sciences head in-charge Kananbala Sarangthem and MU School of Humanities former dean professor P Nabachandra were also present on the occasion.
Professor RR Pandey of MU Department of Life Sciences (Botany), retired professor BN Pande of Dr BAM University, department of environment science, Aurangabad, and ICAR Northeast Region, Shillong director Dr SV Ngachan reviewed the book.
