Sit-in protests staged against alcohol legalisation

As part of their ongoing democratic protest against alcohol legalisation, the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol in association with local women groups have staged sit-in protests at Kakching and Bishnupur district today.
According to a press release issued by Geetchandra Mangang, secretary general, CADA, the sit in protest at Kakching was jointly organised by the All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization (Thoubal Ima), All Kakching Khunou Women's Welfare Association and CADA.
The gathering expressed their dissent against the Cabinet decision to partially lift prohibition on alcohol and called upon the State Government to revoke the decision.

Separately, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), CADA and Ithing Meira Paibi Lup & Pole Star Club, Ithing also organised a sit-in protest at Ithing, Thanga Part II, Bishnupur district around 1 pm today.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Khwairakpam (Ongbi) Sobhamani, member, Ithing Meira Paibi Lup stated that a majority of households have borne the brunt of alcohol abuse.
She maintained that the situation was bad even when alcohol was illegal but expressed worry that things would turn much worse with the lifting of the ban.
She claimed that the State Government had taken this step to earn more revenue but it would prove to be extremely damaging to society and more costly in the long run.
Asserting that abuse of any type of narcotic substances have no positive effect, she condemned the decision to legalise alcohol and demanded its revocation.
