DCCADC seeks safeguard of rights of minority communities

While stating that Rongmei/Kabui people settling in Henglep AC of Churachandpur district have been deprived of their rights to contest in the district council election due to division of Rongmei/Kabui people of Loktak Project area under differ ent District Council Constituencies (DCCs) namely Leimatak and Khousabung, Demand Committee on Creation of Autonomous District Councils (DCCADC) has urged the chief minister and authorities concerned to safeguard the rights and interest of downtrodden minority communities and artificially created minority so that they could be able to participate in the democratic process directly to represent in the councils in the interest of participatory democracy.
In a release, DCCADC pointed out that four newly created hill districts of Manipur, namely Pherzawl, Noney, Tengnoupal and Kamjong extended gratitude to chief minister N Biren for fulfilling the demands of the committee by creating separate ADCs for the said new districts.
Further, the government and department of TA & Hills passed all necessary laws and Acts to have maximum 26 members in the council with 24 members directly elected through universal adult suffrage and two nominated members.
Maintaining that Delimitation Committee and Sub committee has set in motion to draw the electoral District Council Constituencies (DCCs) for the election of ADCs/MDCs in 10 Hills District Councils of Manipur at the earliest, it appealed to 'Delimitation Committee' chairman, members and sub-committees to look into the interest and aspirations of minority communities so that they could have representatives in the councils through direct election in the interest of participatory democracy.
Besides, there are artificially created minority people living in almost all the districts of Manipur hill, the release added.
Manipur Legislative Assembly had passed the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Councils (Sixth Amendment) Act, 2022 in the monsoon session of assembly, it recalled, while adding that the number of ADCs has increased from six to 10 and was published in Gazette of Manipur on August 24, 2022 .
DCCADCs reiterated appeal to the chief minister and the authority concerned to look into the matter with all seriousness to safeguard the rights and interest of the downtrodden minority communities.
