Imphal, September 02 2022:
Although Moirangpurel High School is one of the first schools to be set up under the state government's flagship programme, 'School Fagathansi' for development of the education sector, the school has been unable to function properly due to shortage of teachers.
As such, the students of the school staged a sit-in protest in the campus on Thursday, demanding the government to appoint the requisite number of teachers for the school.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, headmaster Ksh Johnson informed that over 700 students are currently enrolled in the school, which was inaugurated in February 2020 as the first model school under the School Fagathansi' programme.
Despite high hopes of producing excellent students, only 8 teachers are in charge of teaching the 700 students.
The school had 100 pass percentage in the HSLC examination, he said and urged authority concerned to appoint the required teachers as soon as possible.
On the other hand, in connection with the 3-day class boycott protest launched by DESAM from Thursday, DESAM secretary general M Somorjit Luwang said that it was unfortunate to see students stop learning due to shortage of teachers in the school, which was set up as part of the ruling government's School Fagathansi' mission.
This has raised questions on how the government views the education sector, considering the appointment of over 40 teachers in Imphal-based schools having only 100 students and 7-8 teachers in schools in remote areas which have healthy enrolment rate.
This is simply discriminatory, he contended and cautioned of surrendering books to the department concerned if the required number of teachers are not appointed at the earliest.
