Imphal, March 26 2015:
Meetei Eeyek Erol Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has decided to ban newspapers which fail to carry news items in Meetei Mayek script in one full page of the paper from the first week of April .
At the same time, MEELAL also decided to take action against Govt and private vehicles without Meetei Mayek script on their number plates from April first week.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, general secretary of MEELAL, Paonam Thakaba said that newspapers carried news in Meetei Mayek script in a column in all newspapers following an understanding reached with the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) in 2005 .
Despite an understanding reached with Editors' Guild, Manipur and AMWJU to carry news in Meetei Mayek in one full page of the papers, the same has not yet materialised, he said.
As such, any newspaper which fails to carry news in Meetei Mayek script in one full page would be banned from April, he said.
He further said that MEELAL would launch a drive against Govt and private vehicles which do not have Meetei Mayek script inscribed on their registration plates from April.
