Imphal, March 26 2015:
Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) on Thursday said that the water reserved in Singda Dam will last till April 20 next, PHED also informed that water supply schemes in Imphal area have been forced to close down following scarcity of water sourced from Imphal River.
Water supply schemes at Porompat Canchipur, Chinga, Khuman Lampak , Loklaobung and Moirangkhom have shut down as there is no water to pump up from their feeder Imphal river, a PHED official said.
Water tankers have been taken on to supply drinking water to the Imphal residents living under jurisdiction of these water supply schemes, he informed.
He said preparations are on to engage private water suppliers in the exercise.
Some 23 water tankers are now pumping up water from Leishang Hiden and supplying drinking water to the public to tackle water shortage.
The official said as many as 376 water tankers are now being used by PHED on rotation.
The water level at the Singda Dam is low.
However, supply water to the public could last till April 20 only, he said.
"We're releasing water at minimised level." Deforestation in the hills and burning of trees has direct impact on the water cycle, he pointed out.
