CM inspects Koirengei airfield

Chief Minister N Biren Singh inspected the condition of old airfield located at Koirengei in Imphal East district today.
Speaking to media persons, Biren said that even though the old airfield of Koirengei which is about 17 acres was handed over to the Defence Ministry in 1966 for specific purposes, the area is not used in accordance to the understanding reached between the State Government and the military authority.
He said that people have been demanding since quite a long time to shift the military camps currently there at the airfield as residential areas of Luwangshangbam, Khabam, Koirengei, Achanbigei etc.
are located within close proximity of these camps.
Moreover, a vast area of Luwangshangbam Matai was handed over to the military authority for shifting Assam Rifles from Kangla, Biren said.
Consequent upon his appraisal to the Union Defence Minister, the Chief Minister said, the State Government officials had already deliberated about the matter with the higher authorities of the military in order to translate the people's wish into reality.
Discussions are still going on, and the State Government is ready to provide adequate and suitable land for early shifting of these camps, the Chief Minister said.
Biren said that the purpose of his visit was to understand the current condition of the airfield and adjoining areas.
As he has now seen it, the Chief Minister said, he would again approach the Centre soon to shift the military camps.
