KIM takes relief materials to Chassad

Imphal, March 17 2020: Together with KSO and some other Kuki civil organisations, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) went to Chassad today and distributed several relief materials to the victims of the violent confrontation that broke out yesterday between Chassad village and Sampui village where around 150 houses were set ablaze.

The relief materials distributed by KIM included rice, dal, potato, other edible items and clothes.

Kuki Inpi vice-president Sominthang Doungel alleged that some suspected NSCN-IM cadres together with some villagers came to Chassad last morning and vandalised/torched several houses.

He said that around 200 houses were reduced to cinders in the arson.

He said that they have urged the authorities concerned to take up appropriate action against police personnel who were on duty as well as against Assam Rifles personnel who stood silently and watched the arson.

Sominthang Doungel conveyed that they have been assured by the State Government about opening a permanent IRB post near Chassad village within a short time.

Additional Director General of Police L Kailun told media persons that the situation has calmed down considerably following the visit of a Ministerial team led by Deputy Chief Minister to Chassad yesterday afternoon at the initiative of the Chief Minister.

The Ministerial team talked with villagers of both Chassad and Kamjong apart from assuring all possible assistance to all the victims of the violent confrontation.

Informing that they have talked with both the parties, the ADGP said that the authority's priority at the moment must be extension of relief measures to all the victims.

Kailun informed that a peace committee has been formed with responsible and Church leaders of both the parties as its members.

He said that the immediate tasks of the committee are restoration of law and order, bringing peace in the area and prevention of such violent conflicts.

Saying that maximum efforts are being invested to rehabilitate all the victims, the ADGP conveyed that teams of AMUCO and Red Cross Society came to Chassad yesterday and provided relief materials to the victims.

Police too have taken up several precautionary measures to stave off such confrontations in future, Kailun added.
