Imphal, February 22 2022:
Workers of Langthabal AC MLA Karam Shyam allegedly made a family in Langthabal Mantrikhong Makha Leikai to return the GI sheets, which were previously distributed by the MLA, for not attending the flag hoisting ceremony of the MLA.
Later, Mantrikhong Naorem Leikai GP pradhan Aheibam Sunanda made a donation drive to purchase GI sheets and handed them over to the family.
Speaking to newspersons in this regard, one of the family members identified as Okram ongbi Romita conveyed that after her husband's death, she has been taking up all possible jobs to feed her family.
As her house was in a dilapidated condition, a request was made to one of the MLA's workers for assistance a year ago.
Following the request, GI sheets were given to the family.
However, the sheets could not be fitted owing to financial constraints.
She further recalled that since then, they have been attending almost all election programmes of the MLA to show their support.
However, as the number of programmes increased with the days drawing closer to the poll date, she was not able to attend the flag hoisting ceremony as she was trying to find some work.
As such, one of the MLA's workers asked her to return the sheets so that they could use them for roofing a pigsty.
The worker continued to pressure her and thus, she returned the GI sheets on Tuesday.
In this regard, Mantrikhong Naorem Leikai GP pradhan Aheibam Sunanda said that after the matter came to light, the locals pooled money and purchased the GI sheets, which were then over to Romita's family.
She then denounced the act of the MLA's workers against an impoverished household, just because of non-attendance in a flag-hoisting ceremony.
