Imphal, November 18 2021:
Six student bodies namely AIMS, AMSU, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK have raised strong opposition against the appointment of vice-chancellor for Manipur Technical University while stating that the newly appointed VC lacks essential qualification.
In a joint statement, the six student bodies said that it is not a matter of student bodies getting involved in the government's transfer and posting policy but they will not remain silent if any activities of the government pose a threat to the education sector of the state.
They would not raise the matter if the newly appointed VC meets the essential qualification as set by UGC.
As per Section 7.3 of the UGC Regulations 2018, the VC should have a minimum experience of 10 years as a professor in a university or a reputed academic leader in a reputed research or academic administrative organisation.
However, the new VC Dr T Bhaveswar does not meet the essential qualification.
He is an associate professor at Government Polytechnic and is currently, on deputation as deputy director of Controller of Technical Education.
Earlier, in 2016, he was appointed as principal in-charge or Government Polytechnic but the High Court of Manipur nullified the appointment order citing lack of essential qualification set by AICTE norms.
It is questionable why the government appoints a person, who does riot even meet AICTE norms, as the VC of a university, the statement said.
The student bodies further maintained that appointment of unqualified person as VC, failure to appoint regular registrar among others will result in public losing trust in the university, which was set up with high hope of improving higher technical education sector in the state.
The student bodies drew attention of the chief minister and the education minister for reviewing the decision.
The statement also informed that they will submit a memorandum to the Governor with request for re-checking the profile and support documents of the newly appointed VC .
