Imphal, July 05 2021:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) has urged the state government to take up necessary measures so as to ensure irrigation facilities in all the agricultural fields of the state as soon as possible.
In a statement issued by its vice-president S Ibomcha, MPP said that people of the state have been facing hardships due to Covid-19 pandemic for nearly two years now and the hardships will only amplify if the rainfall fails as there is no functional irrigation facility in many parts of the state and farmers are worried that they would be facing possible drought this year.
Farmlands in different ACs such as Sugnu, Hiyanglam, Wabagai, Kakching, Wangjing Tentha, 'Thoubal, Heirok, Andro, Khangabok, Keirao, Kshetrigao, Khurai, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa, Mayang Imphal, Wangoi, Nambol, Oinam, Bishnupur, Moirang, Kumbi and also in Chandel district have started paddy cultivation as these areas have water bodies in abundance.
However, there is little to no water in the remaining areas and farmers are worried.
Operating the Loktak Lift Irrigation canals can facilitate irrigation in over 15,000 hectares of farmland in Bishnupur district.
At the same time, making necessary arrangements to source water from the rivers flowing in the valley area could also facilitate irrigation in most of the areas, the statement said.
It then appealed to the people of the state to stop deforestation activities and plant more trees to increase forest cover in order to bring back regular and adequate rainfall in the state.
It also called for adopting strategies for water harvesting.
