Imphal, July 05 2021:
Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar on Monday charged BJP and its leaders of thinking only about enhancing party's profile while ignoring the lives of the people, who are facing severe hardships due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions.
In a virtual press conference held Monday, the former speaker said that the Central government has even sent its expert team to assess the pandemic situation in the state after seeing no respite in the positivity and fatality rates.
Recently, BJP general secretary BL Santosh and some other party leaders visited the state and people were hopeful that the party leaders would say at least something about the pandemic situation in the state.
However, the central leaders showed that the party has no interest in the lives and safety of the public and it was evident from the media reports published in local dailies citing their visit as pre-poll visit to chalk out strategies for increasing party strength.
It was an unfortunate moment for the people of the state and Congress as an opposition party strongly decries such act of BJP, he said.
BJP does not understand that there will be no politics if there is no humanity.
They should have discussed the problems being faced by the state in fighting the pandemic, reason for failure to control the spread and suggest strategies for facing the crisis.
Though the public, CSOs, NGOs and local clubs are taking the fight against the pandemic to a different level, BJP leaders do not want to encourage them.
Instead, they want to take the opportunity of making paths for another term in power.
Given the recent chain of events, people can no longer trust BJP and it is up to the general public to put their united efforts and take up necessary measures to minimise the impact of third wave of the pandemic.
Keeping their trust on the BJP government will only worsen the situation, he said.
MLA Meghachandra, who was also present during the virtual press conference, said that failure on the part of the government in containing the spread of Covid-19 is evident from the fact that the central government is sending its expert team to assess the situation and chalk strategies to control the situation.
It is learnt that the central team would return on Tuesday after assessing RIMS, he said while urging the central expert team to make public the reason for failure in bringing down the positivity and fatality rates in the state.
Even though main markets in different parts of the state have reopened, Manipur is still facing high positivity and fatality rates.
The general public are facing severe hardships due to long curfew, fuel price hike, price rise of essential commodities, lack of income earning opportunities, non-availabilities of essential commodities among others.
Opposition MLAs have been contributing to their best levels to ease the hardships of the people, he said.
MPCC general secretary Hareswar Goswami said that BJP often targets Congress by accusing it of playing politics whenever the party shares suggestions to fight the pandemic.
He then asked why the BJP leaders did not discuss Covid issues during their visit in the state.
