Imphal, July 05 2021:
A new product, 'Yang Honey' was launched during a programme held at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat, here on Monday.
After launching the honey product as the chief guest, Lok Sabha MP Dr RK Ranjan explained that Yang Honey is a unique honey and it is an organic honey produced from Yang Forest, the only virgin forest in Manipur, and is extracted from highly nutritious honey bees.
These highly nutritious honey-producing bees are frequently attacked by Khoiren bees and Khoibi Ningthou bees (types of giant honey).
The Khamasom Walely villagers give protection from these attacks by providing shelters inside their houses.
Nesting inside the house is the uniqueness of this Yang honey, Dr RK Ranjan added.
He felt that Khamasom Walely village being a biodiversity hotspot with rich natural resources would be the most suitable place for producing one of the best honeys in the world.
Dr Ranjan further said that "it has incidentally become an event of triple five", adding that since Khamasom Walely village was declared as honey bee village on March 5 and launched Yang honey on Monday (July 5) after 5 months, "it is a good sign of successful production of the honey." The Yang honey project is supported by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre (KVK-Ukhrul), with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) taking care of Marketing, Research & Development activities.
It is processed and manufactured by Yang Honey Promotion Society, Khamasom Walely village, Ukhrul district.
The launch programme was organised by ICAR Research Complex and AIMS, Manipur.
Dr H Birkumar Singh, senior principal scientist CSIR-NEIST Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, and Mayanglambam Khelendro, AIMS vice president were present as guests of honour while Dr Chingakham Brajakishor, scientist-D Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal was special invitee.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr I Meghachandra Singh, joint director ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, said that Yang honey can fulfil the vision of the present government to double income of the farmers.
This honey comes from the extreme interior part of Manipur, and it will be of high value in the international market, he said.
Planting of bamboo and tree bean (yongchak) trees was carried out as a prelude to the launch event of Yang honey.
