Women empowerment rallies held in Snpt, Ccpur, Tbl districts

In commemoration of the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who is also known as Father of Modern India, awareness rallies on 'women empowerment' were taken out at headquarters of Senapati, Churachandpur and Thoubal districts.
In Senapati district, the rally was organised by the district administration and District Library in collaboration with Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation under the aegis of ministry of culture.
The rally was flagged off by Senapati ADC CEO HL Jain and participated by students and teachers of different schools under ADC Senapati.
Speaking on the occasion, HL Jain remembered Raja Ram Mohan Roy as a great social reformer who stood for the rights of women.
Some contributions that the late leader had made include abolition of Sati, property rights of women, rights for widows to remarry, education of women and prohibition of polygamy and child marriage, which made him to be called as "Father of modern India" the CEO said.
Interacting with the me dia on the sidelines of the commemorative event, State Central Library, Imphal chief librarian RK Urmila stated that the name "Raja" was given by Mughal emperor, Akbar II, in recognition and honour of Raja Ram Mohan Roy's efforts and suaveness in the field of politics, public administration, social reformation and renaissance.
He was also called as the Father of modern India and renaissance and had mastered in many languages including Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, English, Hindi, Bengali, etc., introduced to western literature and culture and formed the Brahma Samaj, she added.
The event was also organised and sponsored by Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation.
Meanwhile, an awareness programme on 'Women Empowerment' was held on Saturday to commemorate the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, father of modern India.
The programme, sponsored by the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation Kolkata, was organised by the Churachandpur district library officials.
The event was attended Nelson Yumnam, district administration, as chief guest; Lalthajam, CEO ADC Churachandpur, as functional president; and Thangkhosuanmung Guite, chief of Hiangtam Lamka, as guest of honour.
Earlier, a rally was taken out by various students from Bungmual Bazar to the Library Hall.
The rally was flagged off by Nelson Yumnam.
Under sponsorship of Raja Rammohun Roy Foundation, Kolkata; District Library, Thoubal also observed the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Rammohun Roy at Thoubal Mela ground community hall on Saturday.
The observance was attended by Thoubal Municipal Council ward no.1 councillor Okram Inaotombi Devi, District Library librarian L Pramodkumar, Manipur University of Culture librarian Dr Th Khomdon and Ananda Purna School of Science, Thoubal principal Sapam Swaminath as presidium members.
Prior to the main event, an awareness rally on the theme 'Women Empowerment' was flagged off by councillor Inaotombi Devi.
The rallyists marched up to Thoubal DC office gate and returned to mela ground again.
Speaking at the function, Inaotombi called for empowering women and uplifting their socio-economic status in the society.
She also recalled the activities of Raja Rammohun Roy during his lifetime, including restricting child marriage among others and observed that the habit of going to library seems to have faded among the youths.
The councillor also ex-pressed concern that the present-day youngsters seem to be in a serious grip of substance abuse instead of trying to gain knowledge through reading by visiting library.
