Imphal, December 14 2014:
Illegal gambling stalls are now common sight at different mela sites in various parts of Manipur with the students' wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) conducting stern drive against such fair locations and banning two of them.
Several illegal gambling items were seized during a drive against mela sites at Yaingangpokpi, Yaorabung and Waiton in Imphal East on Thursday, JCILPS student's wing convenor M Angamba told media at the committee office yesterday.
He said all the gambling items were burned and destroyed on Friday.
Angamba added that a group of four-five individuals have been organising turning-round fairs in different parts of the state to earn money.
He said 90 percent of all the gambling stall owners in these fairs are from outside the state.
JCILPS students' wing carried out the drive at Yaingangpokpi, Yaorangbung and Waiton after receiving information that most of the mela sites were making money by opening betting stalls, he said.
"We've banned Mela sites at Waiton and Yaingangpokpi until a settlement is brought," Angamba announced.
He also informed all the mela organisers to come to the office of JCILPS on December 15 to attend a meeting which will decide dos and don'ts to make sure that fairs are held in a proper manner.
Angamba further urged the Home Department to look into the matter.
