Imphal, February 14 2023:
With an objective to bring drug addicts to the mainstream, All Manipur Muslim Development Committee (AMMDC) selected seven rehabilitation centres in Thoubal district that have been taking huge roles in saving the future of the state and honoured them by presenting simple gifts and certificates.
In a release, AMMDC said that drug abusers cannot be reformed through harsh physically treatment and cited the World Health Organisation (WHO) report of 2004 that declared drug addiction as a kind of illness.
Highlighting the need of having proper infrastructure and following doctors' advice by rehabilitation centres, it continued that the programme for honouring the rehab centres was done to acknowledge the roles of the centres in bringing drug addicts to the mainstream.
The release added that the committee will continue to organise similar programmes and further appealed to all for supporting them.
AMMDC stated that the committee has been supporting War on Drugs launched by the government in 2017 and also informed that members of the committee rounded up drug addicts and after coming to an understanding with family members handed over 166 addicts to rehabilitation centres located in Thoubal district.
The drugs seized from the addicts were also destroyed, it added.
