Imphal, June 20 2016: Against the backdrop of the rising crime against women and children in the State, the United NGO Mission, Manipur has urged the authority concerned to set up a DNA test centre in order to ensure faster delivery of justice to victims of various crimes relating to women and children.

Speaking to reporters today at its office, Women's Committee convener of UNM-M, Sobita Mangsatabam said that due to various problems like bomb blasts, gunshots etc which occur every now and then, the State police have failed to look after the safety of women and children which resulted in the increase in crime against women and children.

She said that the security personnel are busy guarding VIPs, Govt offices, etc.

Due to this, the security personnel fail to look after the safety of women and children.

Officially, 30 women have been reported missing this year (till date) while one woman was found reportedly murdered after suspicious rape, she pointed out.

Sobita added that the perpetrators of the crime might have close link with persons who are in power as the place where the crime was committed is in between a police outpost and Assam Rifles post in Thoubal.

She further rued that no MLA or Minister have visited the crime spot.

Lamentably, MLA of Khangabok AC, who is also a woman, did not bother to visit the spot where the crime took place yesterday, she added.

In cases of any crime against women and children, local protesters are silenced by local MLA by offering them some lakhs of rupees in order to divert the matter.

The MLA would also appeal local protesters not to politicise any State issue, she said.

She also appealed to the authority concerned to appoint a young, energetic person without any political influence to the post of chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women after the term of the present chairperson ends.

She further urged the Govt to include special budget to deal with crimes against women and children in the State and set up a special investigation unit to conduct probe into cases relating to crimes against women and children.

Pointing out that cases relating to crime against women and children have been delayed due to excuses made by the IO concerned citing that they are waiting DNA test report which is conducted outside the State, Sobita urged the authority concerned to set up a DNA test centre in the State in order to avoid such complication.

She further urged the police to patrol every place of the State in order to prevent crimes against women and children.

Sobita also batted for strengthening the Forensic Sciences Laboratory at Pangei.
