Imphal, June 20 2016:
A sit-in condemning the death of Elangbam
Kanan Devi (21) , d/o Churamani of
Khangabok part II, Khullakpam Leikai was
staged today at Khangabok New Market.
Thoubal District Women Organisation
(Thoubal Ima) volunteers also took part in
the protest demonstration, our
correspondent reports.
Speaking to media persons at the side-
lines of the protest Thoubal Ima secretary
M Manglembi said the rising cases of
such deaths can be attributed to the State
Government's failure to punish the perpe-
trators.
Mention may be made, the decom-
posed body of Elangbam Kanan was
found floating in a Thoubal canal yester-
day days after she went missing.
M Manglembi urged the State Govern-
ment to book the perpetrators and award
them with suitable punishments.
She fur-
ther pledged, on behalf of Thoubal Ima,
to support the JAC formed against the
killing of Kanan in all its protests.
Representatives of the JAC met Chief
Minister Okram Ibobi at noon on the
case, JAC convenor L Ashakumar stated.
The Chief Minister has assured that the
perpetrators would be arrested soon.
The JAC will, therefore, stage peaceful
and democratic protests for three days.
On the fourth day, if the State Govern-
ment fails to keep its promise, the committee will adopt
more severe form of protests, the JAC convenor stated.
Kanan's body has been handed over to the family after
post-mortem, our correspondent reports.
