Imphal, June 20 2016:
The Voluntary Health Unit Committee (VHUC), RIMS observed its 15th foundation day at Manipur Press Club here today.
The VHUC RIMS was established in the first place to extend medical help and other humanitarian services to all the people who suffered casualties during the historic mass movement of June 2001 .
Offering of floral tributes to deceased volunteers of VHUC and distribution of cards to blood donors were the main features of the foundation day observation.
Arambam Loke of Tera Sapam Leirak and his wife Shila were also felicitated for donating blood 50 times.
Speaking at the gathering as chief guest, Red Cross Society Manipur secretary Dr Y Mohen lauded the humanitarian services rendered by the VHUC.
Pointing out that no man is immortal, Dr Mohen said that mankind should serve each other when they are alive.
VHUC president M Subashchandra presided the function.
RIMS Department of IHBT, Head Dr A Barindra remarked that mankind has not been able to invent any element that can substitute blood despite all the advancement in science and technology.
Only 18 per cent of the blood units required for clinical purposes in the State can be collected till date.
But Tripura has been successful in collecting almost 90 per cent of the blood units required in the State and as such they have very little to worry about blood requirements, Dr Barindra said.
A man can donate four units of blood in a year.
Dr Barindra then appealed to all the people to donate blood at least twice or thrice in a year, if not four times.
Senior columnist Saratchand Thiyam was also seated on the dais as guest of honour.
