Manipur State Kala Academy, Imphal kickstarted the 4th Festival of Literature, 2014-15 at Kangla hall, Kangla Fort Complex, Imphal today.
The festival would continue till June 7 .
Speaking at the occasion, Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya said the State lags behind others in the field of literature.
The rich cultural heritage of the State, the folklores, the unique dance and music forms are yet to secure their proper places in the State's treasure trove of literature.
Most of the books written on the history of Manipur and its people have been compiled and published by British colonisers.
These books are the only available link to the cultural history of the State, the MP stated.
The MP further urged people to invest more in resear- ching and documenting the rich cultural heritage of the State.
Art and Culture Secretary K Radhakumar Singh and retired Professor, Department of English, MU Dr N Khogendra were also present at the inaugural event.
A short story reading event was also held at the festival.
