Scholarship meaningless if delayed: AMSU

Imphal, August 08 2021: All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has reiterated that providing scholarship to students will be meaningless if the government delays in releasing the fund.

In a statement, AMSU said that Ishan Uday Scholarship Scheme is a scheme that provides financial support to meritorious students of all categories as the scheme provided Rs 54,000 annual scholarship amount to students in general courses and Rs 78,000 to students in technical courses.

Unfortunately, a big issue crops Up with regard to the scheme after fake lists of students were detected among the shortlisted beneficiaries in several northeast states.

Similarly, there are evidences of fake beneficiary lists in the state too.

Some non-locals were found using false identities of Manipuris to get the benefits.

Keeping in view of the issues and fake beneficiaries, the union urged UGC to verify names of students submitted from educational institutes, colleges and universities in other states through DCs, SDOs and NGOs, compare their certificates with the certificates issued by BSEM, COHSEM, Manipuri universities and other educational institutes in the state.

Any student using fake certificates should be booked as per law, the statement said.

On the other hand, absence of uniform representations among the educational institutions of the state could be seen.

While some institutions are having higher number of beneficiaries and some institutions including premier ones have lower number of beneficiaries.

There are evidences of forging documents of students seeking scholarship, the statement said, while urging the institutions concerned to upload the documents in public domain or to verify with BSEM, COHSEM and universities.

At the same time, UGC and authority concerned can also add a state level verification mechanism to verify the domicile of the applicants.

Such fake lists discourage deserving students and UGC has not taken up any initiatives in this regard even though deputy secretary of higher and technical education had already written a letter to verify the lists concerning the state, the statement lamented, while urging the government to pursue the matter with utmost importance.
