Protestors, police clash; strike called

Police on Wednesday fired tear gas shells to disperse angry protestors, who marched towards Lilong police station demanding justice in the murder case of Korimayum Abdullah, who was found dead seven days after he was allegedly taken hostage by one Tabasum of Keibung Sanasibi Leirak along with her sister and brother in law at the latter's home at Lilong Nungei on May 16 night.
Meanwhile, the JAC against the Brutal Killing of Km Abdullah has called a state-wide general strike for 48 hours demanding swift justice and magisterial inquiry into the delay in tracing the victim after a missing report was filed at Lilong PS.
Local residents of Yairipok Chan-gamdabi under the aegis of the JAC came to Lilong police station to register their protest.
Police tried to stop them at multiple locations - near Yairipok Azad Higher Secondary School, Yairipok Bazar and Thoubal Bazar.
However, they moved through police resistance and proceeded towards Lilong.
Police stopped protestors in Waithou area and dispersed them by firing tear gas shells.
Later, interacting with the me dia, JAC co convener Mk Reihan said that the JAC is demanding magisterial enquiry to find out lapses on the part of police in tracing the victim, fast track the investigation and frame charge sheet within 15 days.
However, the ongoing investigation is moving slowly, which is a clear sign of negligence on the part of police, which is why the JAC came to Lilong police station to carry out a sit-in protest.
He also declared a statewide general strike from Friday 5 am till Sunday 5 am while appealing to all the CSOs, women organisations and local clubs to support the general strike.
However, personnel involved in essential services, religious events and media will be exempted from the purview of the general strike, he said.
He also warned of intense forms of agitation if the police delay in the investigation.
Mention may be made that police have so far arrested seven individuals - three of the victim's friends, Tabasum, her sister and brother in-law and one Aslam alias Ningthou Blowlamp of Thoubal Moijing for interrogation.
