UCM organises workshop on afforestation

United Committee Manipur (UCM) organised a one-day workshop on 'Rejuvenation of farm economy and environment through afforestation' on Wednesday.
The workshop held at its Lamphelpat office was attended by UCM consultant H Ibotombi Khuman as chief guest and president Joychandra Konthoujam as functional president while consultant Khomdram Ratan and professor Kh Lalbihari of MU life science department were present as guests of honour.
Regarding the workshop, Ibotombi said that the entire people of the state are facing the brunt of destruction caused to the natural environment due to massive deforestation and hence only afforestation can restore ecological balance.
Young environmentalist Licypriya Kangujam addressed gathering at the induction ceremony of newly elected president of East Timor few days back and this indeed was recognition of the her continuous campaign to protect environment, he said and stressed the need to protect trees which releases oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide.
He also called for taking up mass bamboo plantation project as part of the environment campaign.
In his speech at the workshop, Joychandra Konthoujam explained that the workshop has been organised primarily to select 30 beneficiaries who are to plant bamboo in the hill areas to save environment and also to enhance their economy.
He also said that UCM will begin plantation of suitable trees at Kwatha and other areas of Tengnoupal and Ukhrul districts.
He also said that many drug factories are being set up in Manipur due to mass poppy plantation in hill areas of the state and this prompted UCM to launch mass tree plantation campaign.
He also assured of providing more saplings of betel nut, litchi, cashew nut and bamboo to the beneficiaries if needed.
