Imphal, May 25 2022:
Committee on Protection of Tribal Rights on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Governor La Ganesan through DC Kangpokpi in connection with the arrest of International Human Rights Association, Manipur Chapter president and social activist Mark T Haokip.
According to the memorandum, the Manipur government had misused Section 135(A) of IPC to effect the arrest Dr Mark Thangmang Haokip.
Dr Mark's arrest has shown the discriminatory attitude of the Meitei-centric government towards the minority Kuki community.
The current unease in the state is caused by Federation of Haomee and Kangleipak Kanba Lup.
Dr Mark was arrested because he objected to the allegations that Kukis are foreigners and refugees.
Dr Mark's statements are wholly based on historical facts and as such, his arrest is in violation of the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19 (1)(A) of the Constitution of India, the petition elaborated and appealed to the Governor for immediate release of Dr Mark.
