Streets echo with 'No NRC, No Census' call

Imphal, September 06 2026: After the Manipur Legislative Assembly reaffirmed its earlier resolutions to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before census, large groups of people came out to streets with torches in their hands and shouted slogans demanding updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year.

Notably, the resolution passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on September 2, 2026 did not specify any base year for updating the NRC .

Streets echo with 'No NRC, No Census' call

Large groups of people came out to the streets at Uripok Khumanthem Lei-kai, Uripok Sinam Leikai, Bachaspati Leikai, Yambem Leikai, Uripok Canteen Corner, Naoremthong Khullem Leikai, Uripok Laikhurembi, Uripok Huidrom Leikai, Keishamthong Hodam Lei-rak and Thouda Bhabok Leikai, Sega Road in Imphal West district and shouted slogans like "No NRC, No Census", "Update NRC with 1951 as base year", "No census without identifying illegal immigrants" etc .

Similar protests were also staged at Thoubal Athokpam, Kongpal Iranpham, Khuman Lampak ISBT and Sagolband Nepra Menjor.

The protesters who shouted slogans demanding updation of NRC before census at Khuman Lampak also took out a torch rally toward Dewlahland.

The protesters categorically stated that no census exercise should be carried out in Manipur until and unless all illegal immigrants living in Manipur are identified and deported.

They also demanded updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year at the earliest.

The protesters asserted that the last sitting of the ongoing State Assembly session scheduled on Monday should adopt resolutions to update the NRC with 1951 as base, withdraw from the SoO agreements with Kuki militant groups and resettle IDPs at the earliest.
