Imphal, October 27 2026:
Eastern Students' Club (ESC) organised a sit-in protest at Nongmeibung today, raising several demands, including updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.
Organised under the aegis of AMUCO, PLMPAM, AMAWOVA, COHR and MSF, the protest saw participants including students holding placards demanding updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year in Manipur, resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) .
The protesters also urged the Government to work out a lasting solution to the crisis plaguing Manipur and invalidate the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral rolls.
Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam called on the people of Manipur to resist any attempt to disintegrate the State.
Claiming that the Centre and the State Government have failed to protect lives, he reminded them that thousands of people are still languishing in relief camps across the State.
He urged the Government to address the grievances of internally displaced persons (IDPs) .
Alleging that the Government of India (GoI) has been using Kuki armed groups as a proxy force to attack the indigenous people of Manipur, he claimed that the persistent problems plaguing Manipur, including economic issues, are the handiwork of the GoI .
Meanwhile, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam claimed that the ongoing crisis in Manipur was artificially created by the GoI .
He asserted that the GoI could end the crisis in Manipur if it is genuinely committed to doing so.
Phulindro urged the Government to take concrete measures to resolve the crisis instead of making sporadic statements on peace from time to time.
