Imphal, January 13 2022:
As the third wave of Covid-19 has started spreading across the country including the state, Chief Minister N Biren has appealed to all the eligible people in the state to get their vaccine doses as early as possible to stay safe from the pandemic.
On Thursday, CM Biren attended a virtual meeting of CMs with Prime Minister Narendra Modi which discussed the third wave of Covid-19, the Omicron wave and related issues.
After the meeting, the CM released a video message in which he made the public appeal stating that Covid-19 will continue to stay in the community as per WHO and experts from all over the world.
The number of active cases was below 100 in the state some days back but the situation is becoming grim with total number of active cases reaching 857 on Thursday.
Fortunately, only one case of Omicron variant has been detected in the state so far, he said.
Maintaining that vaccination is the most effective way to protect oneself from the virus, he urged the public to join the vaccination exercise wholeheartedly.
While conceded that compared to other states, the vaccination rate is very low in the state, he lamented that the second dose vaccination coverage has not reached 50 per cent till date and the main reason is low vaccination rate in hill districts.
According to experts and doctors, vaccinated people are far more likely to face mild Covid as compared to unvaccinated people, reminded the CM and also urged the public to use face masks in public places and work places.
The government is taking up necessary measures by deploying health staff with testing kits at Imphal Airport, Mao and Jiribam check gates, he said and urged CSOs and local clubs to extend active cooperation in the fight against the pandemic while assuring of adequate supply of vaccines, medicines and other requirements.
Informing that over 120 vehicles are being utilised for mobile vaccination activities, he appealed to all concerned to take advantage of these facilities.
