Sensitization workshop on POCSO Act, 2012 held

Imphal, October 12 2014:
A one day sensitization workshop on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 was organized by Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) at the conference hall of Manipur Hindi Parishad today with A Nabachandra, Chairperson of MCPCR attending as chief guest.
While speaking on the topic 'An Overview of POCSO Act, 2012' as resource person, Binobala Nongmeikapam, Child Welfare Officer of Social Welfare Department said that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012 was enacted with the goal to prohibit physical, sexual and psychological abuse of children.
She stated that according to POCSO Act, sexual offence of children is classified into five different categories namely penetrative sexual assault; aggravated penetrative; sexual assault; aggravated sexual assault and sexual harassment.
India recorded the highest number of crime committed against children in the world which is a serious concern, she added.
Attending as resource persons, advocate Rakesh Meihoubam and Lian Vaiphei, member of MCPCR spoke on 'Procedures & Powers of Special Court & Recording of Evidence' and 'Role & Responsibilities of Community Leaders in the Welfare of the Victims' respectively while advocate Th Rajkishore deliberated on the topic 'Roles & Responsibilities of Police in Implementation of POCSO Act, 2012'.
An interaction session was also conducted during the programme.
