Imphal, October 12 2014:
Instead of relying solely on the Govt to overcome sexual assault against children, all concerned should take collective responsibility against such offences.
This was echoed during the one-day sensitisation workshop on Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act held today at Manipuri Hindi Parishad under the aegis of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
Expressing deep concern over the increasing cases of sexual assault against children, the speakers stressed collective responsibility of all stake holders to overcome such offences instead of waiting only the Govt to act.
It was also strongly advocated that members of local clubs, meira paibi, panchayat and ward members of municipal councils, councillors, pradhans and chairpersons be sensitised on POSCO Act, 2012 .
The resource persons of the workshop were Bimola Nongmeikapam, Child Welfare Officer of Social Welfare Dept; Rakesh Meihoubam, director, HRLN; Lian Vaiphei, member, MCPCR and Th Rajkishore, member secretary of CWC Imphal West.
The resource persons highlighted that anyone committing penetrative and aggravated penetrative sexual assault, sexual and aggravated sexual assault, sexual harassment, etc is liable for penalty like jail sentence of 10 years under the Act.
The Act also entitles interim relief to the victim as well as barring media from disclosing the identity of the victim.
