Imphal, February 10 2022:
In pursuit of the demand for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of Indian Constitution, Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) would be holding street corner meetings/campaigns from February 12 to 24 .
In a statement, the Committee recalled that it has been urging the Indian and Manipur government to include Meetei/Meitei in the ST List.
However, the state government is yet to send a recommendation for the same to the central government till date.
Although the movement was slowed down at times owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the committee has been relentlessly requesting the state government to forward the recommendation as soon as possible.
As previously informed, the Committee would be holding street corner meetings /campaigns using loudspeakers from February 12 to 24 so as to shed light on the difficulties faced by the Meetei/Meitei community and to prevail upon the election candidates and their respective political parties to take a firm decision on such an important matter.
The Committee then appealed to the people to extend their support to the meetings/ campaigns.
Even though protests were staged for forwarding the recommendation before the election Model Code of Conduct was imposed, the state, government failed to give any positive response.
Thus, the Committee convened a meeting on December 16 last, wherein it set the deadline for forwarding the recommendation to 3pm of December 27.The government continued to ignore this deadline as well, following which various forms of protests, including a total shutdown, were launched, it recounted.
