Horse rally calls for saving Manipuri Pony from going extinct

Showing solidarity to the call being made to save Manipuri Pony from where the game of polo originated, Manipur Pony Society along with Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association organized a horse rally here today.
The rally, which was flagged off by president of Manipur Pony Society Dr Ksh.
Chourajit from the premises of Pony Breeding Farm at Lamphelpat, passed through Thangmeiband, Lamlong, Telipati, Soibam Leikai, Thangapat, Thongbuthong, Keishamthong, Keishampat, Wahengbam Leikai, Uripok and RIMS Road before winding up at the breeding farm.

A memorandum signed by president of Manipur Pony Society, Dr Chourajit was submitted to Veterinary Minister Govindas Konthoujam.
The memorandum demanded announcement of Manipuri Pony as critically endangered breed; enactment of Special Manipuri Pony & Polo policy and allocation of horse feeding areas.
The memorandum stated that the number of Manipuri Pony in the year 2003 was 1893 and 1218 in the year 2007.However, the number has been reduced to around 500 till the month of August of this year when counted by Manipur Pony Society and Polo Club, thus calling immediate intervention to save the Manipuri Pony from going extinct.
Interacting with media persons, Dr Chourajit said that the number of the rare Manipuri Pony has been decreased to an alarming figure which is a serious concern and added that grounds where the Ponies used to feed themselves have been also encroached.
Stating that the breed gave the world the game of polo which is being played in many countries including United Kingdom, USA, South Africa, France, Thailand, Poland etc, he called upon the people to put in joint effort to save the Manipuri Pony breed from going extinct.
Today's horse rally was also taken part by horse riders belonging to various polo clubs based in different parts of the State.
