Trans-national smuggling gang member netted with 2.3 kg of gold

A team of NAB has arrested a member of trans-national smuggling gang dealing with gold and drugs, and recovered 14 gold biscuits from his possession at North AOC area around 7am on September 30.The arrested gang member has been identified as Md Fakharuddin Ali Hamad (44) son of Md Baseruddin of Kwakta Ward No 1 in Bishnupur district.
According to police, based on information about the movement of some Trans-National gang members along NH-2, random checking was conducted by a team of NAB Manipur at North AOC area at about 7pm on September 30 and detained Hamad for verification.
The detained person was further verified and on thorough checking of his body 14 numbers of suspected gold biscuits, weighing about 2.3 kg, were found concealed inside his socks.
On examination of his mobile phones, many incriminating photos and messages including photos of gold biscuits and illegal drugs were also found in his WhatsApp application.
Upon questioning, he revealed that he belongs to a Trans- National gang of smugglers dealing with gold and drugs smuggling from Myanmar to other states of India through Manipur.
He disclosed that under the command of the gang leader he had smuggled gold and other illegal items like contraband drugs from Manipur to other states many times before.
It is suspected that this Trans-National Gang has been smuggling huge quantities of illegal gold and contraband drugs from Myanmar to various parts of India.
The arrested person along with the seized items has been handed over to Imphal PS for further investigation, it added.
