Imphal, June 22 2026:
The current Government cares only about its survival, and is deliberately ignoring public call to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC), asserted the Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (CFJD) today.
Speaking at a public meeting at Haoreibi Kangjeibung Community Hall, CFJD's finance secretary, Sunil Karam, alleged that the current leadership is afraid of going against Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen.
NRC is a word that angers the Government most at present.
It cares only about its survival, and is deliberately ignoring the call to update the NRC for its survival, alleged Sunil.
Even though the NRC is a process that would help identify illegal immigrants and protect the indigenous people, "our leaders in the Government" are unable to urge the Central leadership to implement or update it (NRC), Sunil said.
The call for NRC to be updated in Manipur is not new.
It is a legitimate demand of the people of the State that could help protect them and the State against illegal infiltration, Sunil said.
Even as the demand to update the NRC is gaining momentum, the Government, instead of updating it, is unfortunately planning to carry out the 2027 census exercise.
The plan exercise, if conducted before NRC, may result in the inclusion of illegal immigrants in the census, Sunil said.
For the census exercise to reflect genuine data, NRC must be updated first, Sunil added.
Sunil also criticised the Centre for implementing divisive policies to fragment the Manipur society.
The appointment of the Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers, all belonging to different communities, is an attempt to divide the people.
The governance of such a Government that is divided in nature is bound to fail, Sunil added.
The public meeting was organised by the CFJD, Haoreibi Apunba Meira Paibi and Haoreibi Apunba Lup.
