A one-day media awareness workshop on newly adopted HIV & AIDS (Prevention & Control) Act, 2017 was held at Mao Poumai Catholic Women's Hall, here.
The event was organised by Khelen Thokchom Trust, Manipur and supported by Manipur State AIDS Control Society.
Phanjoubam Lanngamba, assistant director IEC & Mainstream ing MACS, Omajit Leishangthem, IEC & Mainstreaming MACS, Ksh Deepak, state TI coordinator MACS, Peter Adanl, president Manipur Hill Journalists Union, and Robert Sapam, president of Khelen Thokchom Trust were the presidium members.
Ksh Deepak as a resource person spoke on the topic 'Basics of HIV & AIDS,' Omajit Leishangthem on 'HIV & AIDS (Prevention & Control) Act, 2017', and Phanjoubam Lanngamba on 'Media ethics on HIV & AIDS reporting'.
Media persons from Senapati district attended the programme.
In his keynote address, Sobhapati Samom, secretary Khelen Thokchom Trust, stated that Khelen Thokchom was a senior journalist in the northeast who wanted to develop together the skills of the journalists in the whole state.
Being a journalist, the late leader wanted to address the issues of the state and district in one's own medium to educate the masses on different issues.
Unfortunately, he passed away in 2018.As he wished to provide a good environment for the media persons as well as for their welfare, Khelen Thokchom Trust was formed in his memory.
The primary objective of the trust is to discuss among the journalists how to give a factual report to the public across the region beyond Manipur, he further explained.
The trust is reported to have been organising such programmes on different topics off and on.
When HIV/AIDS is still present even when one knows about it, the topic was reportedly chosen to impart knowledge to the journalists on how they should report as a new Act was passed about it in 2017 and was implemented the next year.
Having felt the need to realise the Act and educate oneself so as to spread to the common people, the trust decided to choose the topic and had already organised such programmes in Churachandpur, Ukhrul and in the valley districts in the past.
Peter Adani thanked the trust for providing the facility to the media persons in the hill districts and hoped that media persons could benefit from such workshops to disseminate the message to the people after acquiring proper knowledge about it.
