Imphal, May 29 2013:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has admitted that the State government gives less emphasis on art and culture though it is a landmark identity of Manipur in the world.
Gaikhangam was speaking as Chief Guest at the reception function of National Awardee film maker Aribam Syam jointly organized by Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC), Film Forum Manipur and Television and Cine Foundation at the MFDC Auditorium, Palace Compound here today.
He further said that Manipur is the power house of sports while art and culture gives a distinct identity of the State to the world.
The State government is doing at least something to encourage the sportspersons by providing jobs and incentives, but not much has been done by the government to encourage achievers in the field of art and culture.
Commissioner of Art and Culture Department Dr RK Nimai said that the department could not focus much on giving rewards to the achievers in art and culture owing to low budgetary allocation of the Department.
He also expressed his desire to include monetary reward for the National Awardees in the field of art and culture apart from the simple appreciation.
It may be noted that Aribam Syam Sharma has bagged awards at the 60th National Film Festival for his documentary film "Manipuri Pony" and feature film "Leipakklei" .
