'Be speed breakers, not potholes'

Acknowledging the role of Opposition Parties in the effective functioning of a democratic government, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has metaphorically stated that the Opposition Parties should act as speed breakers and not as potholes for the Congress Party.
Gaikhangam was speaking as Chief Guest at the one-day Block Level Political Workers' Conference organized by Lamsang Block Congress Committee at the Community Hall of Lamdeng Awang Leikai here today.
Deputy Chief Minister said that the Opposition Parties should be responsible in monitoring and expediting the development projects taken up by the government rather causing unnecessary impediment.
Further taking a dig at the Opposition Parties, Gaikhangam said that the Congress Party is seriously concerned about the welfare of the people and has no time to do petty debates with the Opposition.
Deputy Chief Minister reiterated that the Congress Party is the oldest political party in the country whose values and principles have been drawn from the great freedom fighters who had fought valiantly against the oppressive rule of the British government.
The Congress Party is still working to upkeep the traditions followed by the great leaders of the country.
Highlighting the achievements of Congress led UPA government at the Centre and State Congress government, Deputy Chief Minister said that the Congress Party is striving to bring equitable development throughout the country through various flagship programmes.
He also forecasted that the Congress led UPA government would rule at the Centre again in the next term, and added that the elected representatives are accountable to the people who have given their mandate to be their messengers.
Deputy Chief Minister also stated that the Myanmarese government has even invited Manipur to take part in the international deliberation on economic development.
The Tulihal Airport would be converted into an international airport along with construction of Trans-Asian Highways for linking the State with major Cities of South East Asia.
Gaikhangam further made an appeal to the Manipuri youths to refrain from drug abuse and work sincerely to bring progress and development to the State in the wake of Look East Policy of the Indian government.
MLA of Lamsang Assembly Constituency W Brajabidhu, who also spoke on the occasion, highlighted various projects and programmes that have been implemented already and also those new projects that would be taken in his constituency.
The Political Conference was also attended by Parliamentary Secretary K Meghachandra and other office bearers of MPCC including General Secretary Bidyapati Senjam, Secretary Administration S Jiten, Chairman of Labour Cell Sanatombi Sharma, and Chairman of Legal and Human Rights Chandrakumar.
