Imphal, August 20 2022:
Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba Lup (WAMA), Kanglei celebrated the 31st Manipuri Language Day at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday with Rajya Sabha MP and titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba attending as chief guest.
In his address at the celebration function, Leishemba Sanajaoba said that inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution was not easy and it was achieved only after concerted efforts and intense movement of the people.
Manipuri along with Nepali and Konkani languages were included in the 8th Schedule on the same day and altogether 22 languages of the country have been included in the 8th Schedule so far but Manipuri is yet to be included in the currency notes of India till date.
However, Union finance ministry has given assurance of including Manipuri in the currency notes and the design committee of RBI has started discussion on the same, he said and expressed hope of figuring Manipuri language in the currency notes in near future.
According to Leishemba Sanajaoba, efforts are on to include Manipuri among the classical languages of India and pressure in this regard is being given to the Centre from his side as well as by the state government.
Only six among 1,800 languages of India are currently classified as classical languages and Manipuri will be the seventh one if it happens to figure in the list, he said, adding that he brought up the matter in the Parliament.
The celebration function was also attended by WAMA president Moirangthem Naokhomba Meitei, All Manipur Recognised Private Schools' Welfare Association advisor Namoijam Tomba and LOUSAL president Mutum Churamani.
