Chemo Port brings new dimension in cancer treatment

American Oncology Institute (AOI), Imphal consultant surgical oncology Dr Dhanabir Thangjam has said that chemo port, a device that can be inserted inside the human body, has brought a whole new dimension in cancer treatment and the same facility is now available at Babina Specialty Hospital, Imphal.
AOI Imphal in association with BD Private Limited organised a one day workshop on Chemo Port Insertion at Babina Specialty Hospital, Khabeisoi Sajiwa Jail Road on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, AOI Imphal consultant surgical oncology Dr Dhanabir explained that chemotherapy is an integral part of cancer treatment and a cancer patient needs to undergo this therapy for a period of 6 months to one year.
After some sessions, patients often miss timely session as their veins contract and become hard to find.
However, chemo port has resolved the issue.
In this procedure, chemo port is inserted in the body through a minor surgery and the device remains inside the body till the chemo therapy course is completed.
The device comes in different types and the hospital is now offering the device as well as insertion service at a reduced rate as compared with hospitals in other states keeping in view of the financial condition of the people of the state, The device can now bring a whole new dimension in cancer treatment, he said, adding that the hospital has inserted this device in three patients including a child, who are undergoing treatment in the hospital, free of cost as part of the workshop.
Besides, the device does not cause any discomfort to the patient and it can be removed easily after the therapy is completed, Dr Dhanabir said.
Tata Medical Centre senior consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon Dr Sanjit Kumar Agrawal, AOI Imphal senior consultant surgical oncology professor S Opendro, Babina Group of Companies chairman cum managing director Dr Thangjam Dhabali attended the workshop apart from over 50 doctors from different institutes of the state.
