Imphal, August 20 2022:
Only when one is fluent and knows his/her own language, can they be expected to develop a patriotic spirit, remarked All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) president Haobijam Chalamba during the celebration of 31st Manipur Language Day by AMSU on Saturday.
Mentioning the language promotion methods of the Tamilians, Chalamba said that Tamil people love their language and barely converse in Hindi in their land other than in Tamil or English.
However, in Manipur's context, the people are losing grasp over the vocabulary of our own language, which raises the question on how can someone who does not their own language be expected to have the spirit of patriotism.
Amidst this, the move to make Hindi compulsory till Class X should not be taken lightly.
This could be considered as an attempt to suppress the state's own language through the future generation and cut off our love for our motherland, he stated, while stating that the present generation should take up the necessary steps to save our language.
The celebration was also attended by Manipur University Manipuri Department Assistant Professor N Sanatomba and AMSU advisor YK Dhiren among others.
