Imphal, September 10 2022:
All the five Janata Dal-United (JDU) MLAs, who recently merged with BJP, were felicitated in a function held at the state BJP office named Thambal Shanglen located at Nityaipat Chuthek, here, on Saturday.
Chief minister N Biren Singh and BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi felicitated all the five MLAs namely Kh Joykisan of Thangmeiband, Ngursanglur Sanate of Tipaimukh, Md Ashab Uddin of Jiribam, Thangjam Arunkumar of Wangkhei and LM Khaute of Churachandpur and their office bearers at the event.
Addressing the gathering, chief minister N Biren said that an apolitical movement against drugs is required to uproot drugs from the state or else the society will be doomed in near future.
He maintained that the ongoing 'War on Drug' mission initiated by the government is to save youth and future generation and the mission would not be successful without support from the people.
Expressing concern over recent cases of discovery of contraband drug storage sites in Imphal area particularly in Thangmeiband, Yaiskul and Lalambung, the chief minister said this needs to be looked into seriously and people must take utmost precaution as developing a new Manipur needs close coordination of the people.
He said that the BJP government would not take up any step which contradicts pulse of the people or affects future generation and maintained that BJP is committed to going together with people.
While claiming that peace has returned in Manipur with the support of people, N Biren said that bandh/blockade culture had almost stopped and the state is moving to the right path of development.
Government takes up development projects for convenience of the people but money is required for bringing development, he said and urged people to support government's efforts by earning money in lawful manner so that more development projects could be taken up.
He also clarified that all the five JDU MLAs who merged with BJP placed no condition and they did it in the spirit of collective survival and togetherness with the ruling party.
In his speech at the event, Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan said that it was his mistake to leave BJP in the later part of 2016 and negotiations to return to the party in the past few years could not be finalised.
After the 2022 state assembly election, BJP leaders strongly called for bringing about political unity in Manipur for strengthening unity in India and accordingly discussed with MLA colleagues and decided to merge with BJP.
Lilong MLA Md Abdul Nasir, however, could not be part of the merger as he was busy in treatment of his father and had communication gap, he said and maintained that none of the JDU MLAs set condition before merging with BJP.
The only condition set by the MLAs was to shoulder responsibility as a soldier of BJP to uphold the unity of India and safeguard Manipur's integrity, he added.
