Imphal, January 21 2013:
There is always a reaction to our actions and climate change is the result of our past actions.
In this alarming situation of climate change we need to find alternatives unlike that of Nagas' alternative arrangement, to tone down the impact of climatic change in Manipur, said Prof.M Mani Meetei, Director In-charge UGC-Academic Staff, Manipur University (MU) .
Mani, who presided over the inaugural function of the UGC-sponsored refresher course on 'Global climate change and biodiversity conservation' organised by UGC-Academic Staff, MU at its conference hall here today, said that when we destroy nature, it would strike back to avenge, and what we are experiencing in Manipur today is the outcome of the destruction caused to the nature in the last few years.
We are responsible for the unexpected climatic change and it is high time to take some concrete measures to save the environment.
He pointed out that educational institutes may be mushrooming across the length and breadth of the State today.
However, lack of quality based education is still one of the major concerns in Manipur today.
In such a situation, what can we expect from our new generation, he asked.
On the need for refresher courses for school, college and university teachers, Mani observed that teaching profession is becoming challenging day by day and so it needs orientation and refreshers courses for academicians to train them with modern ways of teaching and explore new strategies that suit the demands of present generation.
Earlier, delivering the key note address, Dr Kananbala Sarangthem, Coordinator of Department of Life Sciences, MU, elaborated on some of the measures that have been taken up to control climate change in Manipur and observed that we should begin tackling climatic change from our respective home.
Encouraging mass tree plantation and preserving indigenous species can help in conservation of our rich biodiversity, he said.
